Volunteer Tutors for Homework Club

About Croi na Gaillimhe
Croí na Gaillimhe Resource Centre opened in 2009 and is part of the Society of St Vincent de Paul   We provide a range of courses, activities and clubs specifically targeting older people, vulnerable/isolated adults and migrants

What's Involved
Volunteers are being sought to help out at a homework club in the Eglington Hostel in Salthill.  The Eglington Hostel is a direct provision hostel for families seeking asylum in Ireland. This position involves providing Homework support to children and young people of various cultural backgrounds and of Primary and Secondary School age. Volunteers will be required to assist children and young people complete their homework and with reading, writing and maths skills. The position can involve only one hour, once a week or more if people like. 

What's required for this position
Volunteers with teaching experience or retired teachers are particularly welcome.  Also, Volunteers with  a commitment to providing a welcoming environment for new communities in Ireland are asked to apply. Experience and/or interest in tutoring, working with children and young people.  Patience, punctuality, reliability, creativity, flexibility, open mindedness.

What Skills are required
Relevant Teaching Qualifications, personable skills, education and training, and community development
Times and commitment required for this role
Minimum time commitment: 3 months – 6 months
Days of Week: Monday – Thursday 3.00p.m. – 6.00pm – can be one day a week.
Hours per week required: 1- 2

English language on line - 
 www.writeon.ie is NALA’s interactive web site to help people improve their reading, writing and numbers skills online. 
 Learners can receive QQI accreditation at Level 2 and Level 3. Users can study at their own pace and in their own time to improve their skills or get a national qualification. Users of the site can have their skills assessed across a number of areas and then be prescribed an individual learning plan to improve these areas. At the end of the learning phase, users are presented with an opportunity to have their skills assessed and request a national qualification. This is the first time that accreditation at this level has been offered in Ireland using the Internet
Provide the necessary language skills to new migrants in a student-centred, welcoming and inclusive manner
Involve volunteer tutors and recognise their skills, expertise and contribution to the community
Promote greater integration and achieve a new sense of community spirit, by forging new friendships and facilitating learning about different cultures. 

Experience Required: Basic 

Skills/ Qualities Needed: Fluent English speaker / with good computer skills 
Time Required: 3 hours on day a week

Tasks:To participate in our fundraising events as part of the fundraising team and to assist our event organiser. The role may expand over time as more fundraising events take place.
Experience Required: All training is provided

Skills/ Qualities Needed: It’s essential that volunteers have a friendly manner, be enthusiastic, approachable and confident in dealing with the public. A genuine interest in charitable organisations combined with an ability to network; be motivated, excellent time management and communication skills would be an advantage.

Time Required: The volunteers would need to be available to help out a fundraising event is being organised.

Number of Volunteers Needed: 6

Tasks:The Social Club takes place on one afternoon a week from 2pm to 4pm. The volunteer would assist in setting up and organisation of any games / activities for the club. This could range from playing cd's / dvd's to board games, bingo and boccia, along with gentle exercises and generally talking to the clients and serve refreshments. Croi­ na Gaillimhe Resource Centre provides a social club for older people, educational supports for youth, adult education programmes, and opportunities for intergenerational projects.
Experience Required: All training is provided and all volunteers work as a member of the social club team.
Skills/ Qualities Needed:  The volunteer needs to have good communication skills and to be outgoing. An understanding of the older person would be useful but not essential.
Time Required: 2 hours a week for 3 months

Training and Support Provided: Yes
