Fundraising Table Quiz a huge success!

Last Tues evening, 26th of June saw Croí na Gaillimhe hold their very first fundraiser table quiz in Lohan's in Salthill which was a huge success!
Our wonderful MC Kevin, had everyone entertained for the night, while Lohan's did a top notch job of looking after everyone and providing some delicious food.

Mostly though we'd like to thank everyone who showed up on the night to support us-we were overwhelmed and delighted with the turnout and didn't expect so many people to turn up-apologies if space was a little tight!

Also, a big thank you to all our sponsors who helped us enormously by donating prizes-Dunnes Stores, Supervalu, Milano, Arabica on Dominick St, Charlie Byrne's, Anthony Ryan's, Griffin's Bakery and Tearooms, McCambridges and Kelly's Bar and Restaurant. The support of local businesses is vital to fundraising and we can't thank them enough for their support and generosity.

All monies raised  will go towards the Croí na Gaillimhe sustainability fund-a vital source of income for the resource centre so we can keep providing all our wonderful programmes and courses to the disadvantaged in our community.

Young and Older Learning From Each Other

We have had a truely fantastic year with the Living Scenes Programme. New friendships formed and tight bonds developed between all participants as they came together for our first ever Living Scenes Christmas extravaganza!! And, the creative side of many came to the fore as they made some very unusual but amazing costumes from newspaper.

And all of this was before they embarked on the creative writing and art modules!!

After such a busy year, we really miss meeting the group every Tuesday morning, but we are already looking forward to meeting our new participants next September!

The below article about the Living Scenes Intergenerational Programme appeared in the Galway City Tribune on Friday 8th June.

Enjoy!

Celebrating the Bealtaine Festival at Croí na Gaillimhe

The Bealtaine Festival, which ran nationwide during the month of May was huge success and here at Croí na Gaillimhe-we were delighted to be able to be a part of it all.

On May 8th, we held our very first 'origami workshop', hosted by the lovely Yoshimi Hayakawa of The Wa Cafe. This was a rare opportunity to learn about the traditional and intricate Japanese art of papermaking.

It was a beautiful afternoon with a big turn-out and we can't thank Yoshimi enough for lending her time and sharing her skills with us.

On May 9th, the renowned Galway poet and writer, Kevin Higgins paid a visit to the centre to give a literary event to remember.
Kevin is the co-organiser of 'The Edge' which hosts a range of diverse literary events throughout the city and also facilitates poetry workshops at The Galway Arts Centre.
Aswell as being the resident poetry critic for The Galway Advertiser, he was the founding co-editor of 'The Burning Bush' literary magazine.
He has won several awards such as the Cúirt Festival Poetry Grand Slam in 2003 and was awarded a literature bursary by the Arts Council of Ireland in 2005.

We were lucky that depsite Kevin's busy schedule, he was able to join us at the centre for a special literary event where he read several reading and excerpts from his catalogue of critically acclaimed work.

The Bealtaine Festival and organisation are co-ordinated by 'Age & Opportunity' which is supported by the National Organisation working to promote greater participation by older people in society.
